Litter isn’t only unattractive. It has significant environmental and economic impacts, harms wildlife and people, and the quality of our agricultural and recreational lands and waters that make Tennessee a special place to live, work, and play.
In Tennessee, excessive littering, scant recycling, and over-reliance on landfills is increasingly unsustainable. Litter is so common that it’s easy to overlook, despite the damage it causes and the costs it creates.
Litter will continue to be a drag on the state’s natural resources, economy, beauty, and the quality of life its residents until more effective action is taken. Awareness campaigns haven’t solved the problem. Ask your community leaders to support policies, practices, and legislation that addresses litter and the waste stream holistically.
