Athletes Complete Season, Begin Lifetime Outdoors

Your support converts athletes into lifelong outdoorsmen and women—at the range and in the blind. The Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program’s State Championships is one of the largest amature shotgun shooting sports events in the nation.

During the third week in June, more than 1,300 student athletes from all corners of the state converged on Nashville to compete in the 2018 Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program State Championships, at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex.

The event spanned five full days of co-ed competition in three shotgun shooting sports disciplines: trap, skeet, and sporting clays. More than 70 titles for individual, squad, and team performance were up for grabs.

“Tennessee SCTP is proud of all our athletes—and the coaches and parents who support them. These young men and women are not only accomplished on the shooting sports fields but also academically,” said Andrew Peercy, Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program manager. “The athletes performed exceptionally well and impressed the spectators with their skill, determination, and sportsmanship.”

The governing body of the sport in Tennessee is the Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program, an initiative of Tennessee Wildlife Federation. The program introduces youth to the shooting sports and recruits them into an outdoor lifestyle.

“We’re excited to see many Tennessee SCTP athletes move on to the 2018 National Championships, July 14-21, and we are confident they will represent the state of Tennessee and our program well,” said Andrew. “Not only do these youth represent the shooting sports, but they also represent the future of outdoor sports, conservation, and wildlife in Tennessee. That’s exciting.”

Sportsmanship was on display on the sidelines too as athletes, coaches and parents were able to enjoy some fun and lighthearted competition throughout the week. The Fun Shoot saw coaches challenging each other and parents challenging their athletes. A portion of the proceeds was donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in honor of an athlete currently receiving treatment there. Winners received Academy Sports + Outdoors gift cards.

Crazy Quail was a hit again this year with participants testing their reflexes to hit targets that fly, at random, in almost any direction. Crazy Quail’s sponsor Barrett had its line of premium shotguns available for participants to try. Barrett also donated a shotgun for a drawing among athletes. The Barrett Sovereign BX-Pro Sporting shotgun went to Dale CollinsThis year’s recipient of the Barrett Sovereign  BX-Pro Sporting shotgun was Dale Collins.

Last but not least, Last Competitor Standing, sponsored by Gamaliel Shooting Supply, awarded the top male and female competitors for three nights each night with $250 gift cards.

Many of these young shooting sports athletes will mature into avid outdoorsmen and women, who ultimately will lead and fund conservation efforts in Tennessee and around the country. Participation in Tennessee SCTP not only fosters all the qualities of sportsmanship and safe firearm handling, it also provides a path into investing in wildlife and natural resources.

Congratulations to all of our 2018 Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program athletes on a successful season and impressive showing at the State Championships!
