The 2015/16 season is in the books, and by all accounts it was a huge success. None of it would have been possible without you, and we thank you for your hard work and tireless support of TNSCTP and scholastic shooting sports. We are now preparing for 2016/17, and our goal is to not only continue the great new things we implemented last season, but to constantly enhance and refine the program moving forward.
Some of the highlights from the past season include:
Regional Coaches’ Meetings: J.W. Worthen kicked off preparations for the 2015/2016 with a statewide tour that included meetings with teams in each region. Last fall, we held formal coaches’ meetings in each region, and we are currently scheduling those meetings for the 2016/2017 season. These meetings really help us get feedback from the coaches, and enable the coaches to get to know one another. After digesting what we learned from you, we created a survey that went out to all coaches to gather opinions on the direction of several key issues.
Updated Communications: We strive each year to improve our communications, and doing so requires each of you to give us the correct contact information for yourself, your assistant coaches, and your athletes. This past year we refined our email lists and updated all contact information. This is an ongoing process, and it relies on you… please let us know of any contact changes. This year, we also began utilizing SMS (text) messaging for news and alerts around the State Championships.
More Localized Coaches’ Classes: Each coach is required to earn the Level 1 NRA certification, and we held five qualifying classes across the state last year. We are in the process of scheduling several for the coming season.
Coach Symposiums: We held our first coach symposium in Region 2, providing an opportunty for coaches to get together and share ideas. The first event went really well, and we are planning to expand them to every region this coming season.
New TNSCTP.org Website: Last fall, we launched a new website at TNSCTP.org, the central resource for all things related to the program. The new site includes calendars, scores, news and other information that is constantly updated. Send us your news and events, and we’ll publish it on the site!
Gamaliel partnership: TNSCTP has partnered with Gamaliel Shooting Supply through their “Ready-Set-Pull” program to provide discounted products for teams and athletes. Many teams have taken advantage, and if you haven’t already, it’s worth a look. Click HERE for more information.
Range Expansion: As a result of the program’s rapid growth, TNSCTP has made a concerted effort to increase practice space. This year, we have placed eight new machines and will continue to work with new ranges to increase capacity. We are expecting several new facilities to come online during this upcoming season.
SHOT 5: For our State Championships, we began utilizing the national SCTP online scoring system, which also allowed you as coaches to choose your time slots when registering for events. From there, everyone could view the results immediately as the scores were entered. Now that all of your athletes have been entered into the system, you are able to use SHOT 5 to host local events across the state. Our goal is to have all of the Regional Championships available through SHOT 5 this coming year.
Enhanced Awards: This season saw the return of the Squad Awards. Many of you had asked for them and we were happy to bring them back. Also, we were pleased to enhance the quality of the awards. We really appreciate the feedback on the new medals and trophies.
State Championships: The State Championships had many improvements. These included:
SHOT 5 for scoring and registration
On-line pre-ordering for customized t-shirts
More high quality vendors
Long Bird, Crazy Quail, and Last Man Standing
Coaches on the field for safety
Better parking control
National Titles: With the move to the Cardinal Center, we saw a slight dip in attendance, but not in the level of accomplishment. We brought home 23 national titles for the second year in a row, along with almost 100 other individual and team awards.
All-State & Scholarships: This year saw the restructuring of our All-State awards. We were able to recognize 88 athletes for their achievement in the classroom and on the field. We had a great Ironman shoot/recognition event and appreciate everyone who was able to attend.
In addition to the many things that TNSCTP has done this year, we are continuing to expand the popular Youth Hunting & Fishing Program (now a separate and separately funded TWF program) by introducing our Hunt Master Program, where we train guides to take youth and their parents on 2 to 3-day hunting and fishing trips that include primitive camping and cooking. In addition to our signature waterfowl hunt and two dove hunts, we added three family fishing events, along with two turkey hunts and a squirrel hunt. Click HERE for more information, and to get involved!
Please stay alert for many more exciting things to come in this program.
We are in the planning stages for the new season to begin. We hope to be announcing soon:
New NRA Level 1 coach certification classes across the state
Coach symposiums in each region
More local shooting events
Potential new statewide events for TNSCTP
Exciting new hunt opportunities through TWF’s Youth Hunting & Fishing program
This has been a really exciting year, and we are looking forward to a new one around the corner.
